Super Falcons Star Toni Payne Reveals Her Favourite Tattoo and its Deep Meaning

Super Falcons midfielder Toni Payne has shared the significance of her favourite tattoo, a personal emblem of her connection to Nigeria.

The 29-year-old recently joined Everton in the England Women’s Super League after a remarkable tenure at Sevilla in Spain’s Liga F, where she netted 30 goals in 169 appearances. Payne, who has been a standout player for the Super Falcons since committing to Nigeria, has played 24 matches for the national team, playing a key role in their campaigns for the 2024 Olympics and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN Africa, Payne revealed the story behind her favourite tattoo, which features the shape of Nigeria. “My favourite one is the shape of Nigeria. I love this one,” she said. “Growing up and being born in the US, I didn’t always feel connected to the Nigerian culture, but since joining the national team and being able to go back to Nigeria often, I’ve been able to connect in that way.”

The tattoo, Payne explained, is more than just ink; it’s a proud reminder of her roots and identity. She added, “So, I just love to have it, and no one can question where I’m from; they don’t even have to ask—they can see.”

Through her tattoo, Payne visually reaffirms her bond with Nigeria, something that has grown since joining the Super Falcons. Her journey with the national team has given her a profound sense of belonging and pride in her heritage, which she now proudly displays on and off the pitch.
