Super Falcons Stay Africa’s Top Women’s Football Team in Latest FIFA Ranking
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have maintained their position as the best women’s football team in Africa, according to the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking released on Thursday.
The nine-time African champions remain in 36th place globally, despite not playing any matches since the last ranking was published on December 13, 2024. The lack of recent competitive action, due to club football commitments, has not affected their standing as Africa’s highest-ranked team.
South Africa, the current Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champions, stay in second place in Africa but have dropped four spots in the global rankings to 54th.
Morocco is ranked third in Africa and 60th globally, while Zambia has fallen two places to 64th but remains fourth in Africa.
South Africa could challenge Nigeria’s top spot later this year, with the next WAFCON offering a chance for the Banyana Banyana to close the gap. If they defend their title, South Africa could overtake Nigeria as Africa’s number one team.
With key players like Gift Monday, Rinsola Babajide, Tony Payne, Ifeoma Onumonu, Rasheedat Ajibade, and the legendary Asisat Oshoala, Nigeria will be keen to reclaim the title they last won in 2018.
Globally, the United States remain in first place, with Spain holding second. Germany and England retain third and fourth spots, while Japan has risen to fifth, pushing Sweden down to sixth.
In Africa, Kenya made a big leap, rising seven places to 142nd, while Tunisia suffered the biggest drop, falling 11 places to 89th. Djibouti achieved their highest-ever ranking, moving up to 195th.
The next FIFA Women’s World Ranking will be released on June 12, 2025, with the Super Falcons aiming to climb higher ahead of the highly anticipated WAFCON tournament.
