Super Falcons to Face Zambia in WAFCON Quarterfinal After Draw with Algeria

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will now face Zambia on Friday in Casablanca for a place in the semifinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
This follows a goalless draw against a determined Algerian side on Tuesday night. Despite the draw, Nigeria finished top of Group B with seven points from three matches. Algeria came second with five points.
In the group’s other game, Botswana came from behind to beat Tunisia 2-1, finishing third with three points. Tunisia ended bottom of the group with just one point.
It will be a familiar meeting between Nigeria and Zambia, as the Zambians denied the Super Falcons third place in the last WAFCON held in Morocco three years ago.
Against Algeria, Nigeria fielded a largely second-string team, giving first starts of the tournament to eight players. The Super Falcons created more chances in the match but were unable to convert any, while Algeria stayed strong in defence and celebrated reaching their first-ever WAFCON quarterfinal.
Nigeria Starting XI vs Algeria:
Nnadozie – Usaini (Ijamisilu 78’), Shukurat, Demehin, Isah – Ucheibe, Echegini, Ajibade – Ordega, Ihezuo (Babajide 78’), Onumonu (Okoronkwo 54’).
The Super Falcons will now shift their focus to a tough quarterfinal clash against an in-form Zambian team, with hopes of progressing to the final four of the competition.
