Supersand Eagles make Nigeria proud with victory over Mauritania

After a five-year absence, Nigeria’s Beach Soccer national team, the Supersand Eagles, made a triumphant return with a 5-4 win over Mauritania in the first leg of the Nations Cup qualification match on Saturday, July 20, 2024.

Despite late preparations, the Super Sand Eagles have achieved their initial objectives and are now focused on securing their spot in the 2024 Beach African Cup of Nations in the second leg next week in Nigeria.

Return to the International Scene

The Supersand Eagles had been off the international scene for quite some time, but the current Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) under President Ibrahim Gusau successfully revived the team.

The Sand Eagles were drawn against Mauritania for the 2024 Beach African Cup of Nations qualifiers, and they were led by Beach Soccer Committee Chairman, Otuekong Nse Essien, for the away game.

Hard-Fought Victory in Nouakchott

The encounter in Nouakchott was keenly contested, with Nigeria prevailing 5-4 against the hosts. The Supersand Eagles departed Nigeria on Friday and played their first international match in five years the following day.

Supersand Eagles Team Leadership and Squad

The NFF recently appointed Abdullahi Isa as head coach of the team. The squad features experienced players such as Victor Tale and Emeka Ogbonna, alongside Arome Isah, Adams Taiwo, Emmanuel Ohwoferia, Godwin Tale, Egan-Osi Ekujimi, Chidozie Frank, and Hassan Abdullahi.

Looking Ahead to the Second Leg

With the return leg scheduled for Saturday, July 27, in Nigeria, the Supersand Eagles are determined to secure their qualification. The team’s performance in the first leg has raised hopes for a successful campaign in the 2024 Beach African Cup of Nations.

The Supersand Eagles’ remarkable comeback has reignited excitement among fans and marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s beach soccer journey.
