Taiwo Awoniyi and Ola Aina fitness update provided ahead of Forest V. Liverpool clash
Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo addressed the media at the pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s Premier League encounter with Liverpool.
The Portuguese coach provided updates on the fitness of two Super Eagles players, Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi.
Aina has been sidelined for three consecutive matches, including games against West Ham United, Aston Villa, and Manchester United, following his return from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury.
Nuno Espírito Santo confirmed that fellow 2023 Africa Cup of Nations participants Ibrahim Sangaré and Willy Boly are progressing well in their recoveries from injuries. However, there was no positive news regarding the Nigerian wing-back.
The 50-year-old manager expressed uncertainty about the availability of certain players for Saturday’s match at the City Ground.
“Not sure. Let’s see tomorrow, some players are in the final part of their recovery. Ibrahim (Sangaré) is close,” Nuno Espírito Santo told reporters.
“Chris Wood is also closer. Ola and Nuno (Tavares) are facing more problems. Boly is in the final days of his recovery.”
Nuno Espírito Santo noted an improvement in the fitness of Awoniyi, as the striker was able to complete the full duration of the challenging match against Manchester United on Wednesday.
“He played a crucial role in the previous game, not just for 45 minutes, but he managed to finish the entire game today.
“I believe he’s progressing in terms of fitness. He had been out for a considerable period, so his recovery for the next match will be vital.”
With twelve games remaining in the 2023-2024 season, Nottingham Forest finds themselves in a precarious position, four points above the relegation zone.
