Taiwo Awoniyi to wear mask against Newcastle
Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed that striker Taiwo Awoniyi is fit to play in their Premier League match against Newcastle United.
However, the Nigerian forward will need to wear a protective mask as he continues to recover from a head injury.
At his pre-match press conference, Espirito Santo gave an update on Awoniyi’s condition after he missed some games due to the injury.
“Yes, yes, he is clear under the concussion rules,” said Espirito Santo, according to the BBC. “So, he is available. He will wear a mask, but he is available.”
Awoniyi got a facial injury in a collision during an FA Cup match against Exeter City, which forced him to leave the field for medical treatment.
Since then, the striker has been recovering well, but the club’s doctors have advised him to wear a mask while playing.
When asked how Awoniyi is adjusting to the mask, Espirito Santo said the forward is still getting used to it. “He is trying to get used to it,” he explained.
Awoniyi’s return will be a big boost for Nottingham Forest as they prepare for the game against Newcastle.
The 27-year-old has been a key player for the club since joining from Union Berlin in 2022, scoring important goals to help Forest stay in the Premier League last season.
Nottingham Forest is currently in third place, aiming for a top-four finish, and will be keen to keep their strong form going.
Awoniyi’s return will give Nuno Espirito Santo more options in attack as Forest looks to get a good result against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle team.
On overall squad fitness, Espirito Santo said there were no new injury problems, adding: “No. Assessing players, the normal.”
With no fresh injuries, Espirito Santo is likely to have a strong squad available for the important match.
Forest fans will be excited to see how Awoniyi plays with the mask and if he can make an instant impact after his return.
The match between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United will take place at St James’ Park on Sunday, with both teams aiming to secure three points.
