Taylor caught napping as Windies draw tour match

West Indies paceman Jerome Taylor had a moment to forget during the second and final day of the tour match against Victoria XI when he was caught napping on the boundary.

The Windies suffered a crushing defeat in the first Test against Australia last week, losing by an innings and 212 runs, and will be out to salvage some pride when the Boxing Day Test gets underway at the MCG.

There was more embarrassment for the tourists, and Taylor in particular, on Sunday though when Jake Hancock hooked a Jason Holder delivery in the region of fine leg, but Taylor had his back to play and only turned around when it was too late to take the catch.

Hancock was on 22 at the time and went on to make 80 not out before rain brought play to a premature end, with the Victoria XI 169-3 in reply to the tourists’ 303-8 declared.

Windies coach Phil Simmons did not see Taylor’s misdemeanour, but was less than impressed to be informed of it.

“I’ll hear about it officially in a little while, because I wasn’t watching at the time,” he said.

“It can’t be a good look. It’s a team trying to gain that sort of respect. Things like that, we have to make sure we cut them out.”

Hancock revealed that the West Indies players saw the funny side of the incident.

“It was pretty good that. I definitely got away with one there,” he said.

“I couldn’t really see what happened. He wasn’t even on the field, was he?

“They (the Windies) had a little chuckle. They sort of just brushed it off really and kept going. They didn’t seem too fazed by it.”
