Team Nigeria Boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore disqualified from Paris Olympics for Doping
Team Nigeria boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore has been removed from the Paris 2024 Olympics women’s boxing event after testing positive for a banned substance, the International Testing Agency (ITA) announced on Saturday, July 27.
The 22-year-old African Games lightweight champion tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic used as a masking agent that can conceal the presence of other drugs.
The ITA confirmed that Ogunsemilore has been provisionally suspended and will not compete in the Olympics.
Ogunsemilore, who was set to compete in the round of 16 on Monday in the women’s 60-kilogram (132-pound) weight class, had been the fourth-seeded boxer in her division.
She won the African Games title in her weight class earlier this year and also earned a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
This marks the second doping case to be announced at the Paris Olympics, following the positive test of Iraqi judoka Sajjad Sehen for two anabolic steroids.
