TENNIS: ATP Boosts Financial Support for Lower-Ranked Players with $1.3 Million Distribution
The ATP has distributed $1.3 million (approximately ₦1 billion) to 26 players as part of its new financial security programme, Baseline, in 2024. The programme, which launched earlier this year as a three-year trial, guarantees a minimum income for the top 250-ranked singles players. ATP chief Andrea Gaudenzi called the initiative a “game-changer” for players at lower ranks.
“We’re providing the financial support needed to help players overcome challenges and build a sustainable career, whether they’re dealing with injuries, setbacks, or entering the tour for the first time,” said Gaudenzi.
In its first year, the Baseline programme has already had a significant impact, with $1.3 million (₦1 billion) distributed to players. The ATP plans to increase support in 2025, marking the beginning of a larger commitment.
While top players earn significant amounts through tournament winnings and sponsorship deals, many lower-ranked players rely solely on prize money to make a living. During the Covid pandemic, when the season was paused, many players faced severe financial difficulties. This prompted big names like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic to call for a solution.
In 2024, 17 players received support through the minimum guarantee plan, where the ATP covered any shortfall when earnings fell below the set threshold. Three players received income protection after struggling with injuries, while one player benefited from both plans. Additionally, seven rising stars received aid through the newcomer investment plan after breaking into the top 125 for the first time.
For 2025, the ATP will raise the minimum guaranteed earnings: $200,000 (₦160 million) for players ranked 101-175 (up from $150,000), and $100,000 (₦80 million) for those ranked 176-250 (up from $75,000). The threshold for the top 100 will remain at $300,000 (₦240 million).
This means that any player who finishes 2024 in the top 250 will be guaranteed at least $100,000 (₦80 million) in 2025 if they play 15 events.
