Terem Moffi on fire as Nice stun PSG at home

Super Eagles ace hands timely reminder to national team selectors

Terem Moffi continued his impressive run against PSG as he contributed to all three goals in Nice’s 3-2 win at Parc des Princes. The Nigerian striker took his tally to three goals for the season as Nice claimed a huge win.

PSG started the game looking for a third win in a row in Ligue 1, and French star Kylian Mbappe was handed the captain’s armband from the start of the encounter. They were faced by a Nice side that have yet to taste defeat in the league after four rounds of matches.

Moffi opened the scoring after 21 minutes when Le Gym took advantage of a ball loss by Mbappe, and the 24-year-old squeezed home an effort at the near post via a slight deflection. It was the striker’s fourth career goal against PSG, his favourite opponents.

The visitors’ lead lasted only eight minutes as captain Mbappe stepped up with a fine equaliser for PSG. The Frenchman took a first-time shot from outside the box following a square pass from Achraf Hakim for his sixth goal of the season in Ligue 1.

Ousmane Dembele missed a glorious opportunity to score his first goal for Les Parisiens, blazing over from inside the box when faced with only the goalkeeper.

Eight minutes into the second half, some more Moffi magic helped Nice go ahead once more in the game. The Nigerian striker received the ball wide on a counterattack isolated against Danilo Pereira. After a couple of step-overs and fakes, he left the Portuguese player on the seat of his pants before digging a precise cross to the far post where Gaetan Laborde was waiting to stab home and restore the lead.

Moffi silenced the Parisien crowd with his third goal of the season for Nice, a fine finish following a fast break. The striker found himself isolated with a defender on the right wing and shifted the ball calmly onto his left foot by cutting inside. When he found space, he spanked a shot that flew past Gianluigi Donnarumma into the far corner in the 68th minute. The Nigerian international whipped off his shirt in celebration, earning a yellow card.

PSG were not done, and Mbappe scored his seventh goal of the season with a fine volley in the 87th minute. Luis Enrique’s side could not fashion an equaliser as Nice held on to inflict a first defeat of the season on PSG.

After missing out on the last Super Eagles squad, Terem Moffi has delivered a timely reminder of his quality to Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro ahead of the upcoming international window and AFCON.
