ThankGod Chilaka scores Ikorodu City’s first-ever NPFL goal

ThankGod Chilaka made history for Ikorodu City FC by scoring their first-ever goal in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), but the club’s search for a victory continues after a 2-1 defeat to Nasarawa United on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

ThankGod Chilaka, who joined Ikorodu City on loan from Nationwide League side Nordic Football Academy, where he impressed top Nigerian clubs with his performances, opened his NPFL account with a well-placed header. His goal, which came from a Waliu Ojeyote cross, marked a significant milestone for the Lagos-based club, as it was their first goal in the NPFL.

However, despite Chilaka’s efforts, Ikorodu City suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, leaving them winless in the league and rooted to the bottom of the table.

Nasarawa United took the lead just before halftime, with Anas Yusuf finishing off a swift counter-attack to put the Solid Miners 1-0 up. After Chilaka’s equalizer in the second half, Nasarawa United regained the advantage through Kabir Balogun, who scored a brilliant free-kick to secure their first win of the season.

While the newly promoted Oga Boys have shown glimpses of promise, their inability to convert chances and close out games has been their downfall. Ayomide Cole and Chilaka both had opportunities to score more, but Nasarawa United’s goalkeeper made crucial saves to deny them.

The defeat leaves Ikorodu City in a precarious position as they remain at the bottom of the table, still seeking their first win in Nigeria’s top division. Nasarawa United, meanwhile, have moved out of the relegation zone with the victory.

Ikorodu City will need to turn their fortunes around quickly to avoid a difficult relegation battle. Their next match is against Plateau United in Jos, where they will hope to secure their first points of the campaign and climb out of the danger zone.
