“The most important thing was to get through” — Sinner and Alcaraz reach Monte Carlo Quarters

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz both had to work harder than expected to reach the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo.

Sinner came through a three-set match against Tomáš Macháč, winning 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-3. It was the first time in a while he dropped a set at Masters level, but he found a way through.

After the match, he said:

“I think I can be happy. Not every day is the same. I was struggling a little bit. I was a bit tired… The most important thing today was to try and get through somehow.”

“I felt great before the match. In the second set I struggled a bit to find the right energy, but this can happen. I tried to push myself through… Even when you don’t feel your best, you try to find ways and that was the case today and I am happy.”

“I can play great tennis tomorrow hopefully. I just try to perform in the best possible way and today is a positive.”

Alcaraz also dropped a set but beat Tomás Martín Etcheverry 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to move into the last eight.

He said:

“I was playing really well in the first set. I was feeling the ball 10/10.”

“Then I started pretty well in the second set as well… but I didn’t take it. When you don’t take the opportunities at this level, you have to run back. He played more aggressive after that, but I would say it was a great fight in the end.”

Sinner will now face Felix Auger-Aliassime, while Alcaraz takes on Alexander Bublik in the quarter-finals.
