Thiago Alcantara makes immediate return to football after retirement

Former Bayern Munich and Liverpool midfielder, Thiago Alcantara has quickly transitioned into a coaching role following his recent retirement from professional football.

Barcelona have announced that Thiago, 33, will join Hansi Flick’s coaching staff to begin his coaching career.

In a statement, Barcelona confirmed Thiago’s new role and emphasised his importance in helping Flick adapt to the club’s dynamics.

Thiago, who came through Barça’s renowned La Masia academy, is expected to be with the men’s first team squad for the entire summer, including their U.S. tour.

Thiago’s familiarity with Barcelona and Hansi Flick, under whom he won the treble with Bayern Munich in 2020, will be invaluable. His extensive experience, having made 101 appearances for Barcelona before moving to Bayern and later Liverpool, positions him as a key asset for the coaching staff.

Barcelona’s coaching team under Hansi Flick also includes assistant coaches Marcus Sorg, Toni Tapalovic, and Heiko Westermann, with José Ramon De la Fuente continuing as the goalkeeping coach. #

Thiago announced his retirement after his contract with Liverpool expired on June 30, 2024. During his time at Liverpool, injuries limited his appearances, but his impact on the field was significant. Now, as he transitions to coaching, his expertise and understanding of top-level football will be critical in his new role at Barcelona.
