Third tier Saarbrucken stun Bayern Munich in historic Cup upset
Bayern Munich have crashed out of the 2023-24 DFB Pokal after a shocking 2-1 defeat at the hands of 3. Bundesliga strugglers Saarbrucken.
German third tier side Saarbrucken were heavy underdogs coming into the encounter against perennial Bundesliga champions and European giants Bayern Munich.
Bayern Munich took the lead as expected in the encounter when veteran forward Thomas Muller fired home a brilliant shot from outside the box in the first half.
With the half nearing its conclusion, the minnows were gifted a way back into the game as Kim Min-Jae gave the ball away in defence. Saarbrucken moved quickly and the ball was squared for Patrick Sontheimer, who swept home into an empty net to level for the minnows.
Saarbrucken held off the German giants before going on to deliver a 96th minute winner via a well-worked counter attack, with left-back Marcel Gaus scoring his first DFB Pokal goal in 10 years to send the Ludwigsparkstadion into a frenzy.
The struggling side, who are in 15th place in the third tier of German football, dumped the 20-time Cup winners out of the tournament in historic fashion.
