Three things Conte must do to make Chelsea a Championship team again

By: Chelseajournal

Chelsea may have won their last three competitive games (two in the Premier League and one yesterday in the League Cup round two) howbeit, not in a convincing manner.

Although, if you compare the outcome of the games to last year’s results as at this time you could be satisfied, but struggling to beat a team like Bristol City at the Stamford Bridge isn’t a Chelsea thing. The club is gradually getting back to the Chelsea that won the league 2 years back but there are things still to be done.

Here are three things Antonio Conte must do to make Chelsea a championship team again.

1. Sign a central defender and a wing back

We have seen our transfer targets taken off our eyes because of our unwillingness to pay ridiculous fees for them, and we are finding it difficult to get other targets due to astronomical asking fees. Whatever it will take Conte and Emenalo we msut get a central defender and a wing back.

In the absence of Kurt Zouma, Chelsea conceded a lot of goals to teams with pacy strikers and players with aerial threat. Terry-Cahill combination has proven to be very poor in its best and we need someone who can start ahead of Cahill with Zouma still out injured.

Ivanovic exposed the defence a great deal last season and proved to be a sure channel to get a goal against Chelsea, the story hasn’t changed much this season this is why Chelsea need a left back who will fit into the team instantly giving Azpilicueta the chance to go to his original position the right back.

2. Solve the set-piece puzzle

I know its difficult to defend set-plays, but when you concede more from them than an open play then it becomes a worrying thing.

We conceded a great deal of goals via set plays last season and this season it has started, we hardly convert our set plays (Willian scored few via free-kick) we conceded more from set plays than we scored. The team need to learn how to defend them and learn to use them to our advantage.

3. Kill it off

Chelsea back in the days could score ‘a half goal’ and hang on to it but that has changed, sometimes we score two goals and we let the lead slip of our hands.

I am glad the boss has noticed that, he mentioned it after yesterday’s game at the post match conference that his team created plenty of chances in the first half but must kill the game when they have the chance. It shouldn’t stop at observing the errors, but making correction where needed.

If we get a central defender, a wing back, solve our set-piece puzzle and kill off games when we have the chance, we will surely be back where we belong winning trophies and setting standards for other clubs.

Its going to be a very long season but signs are that will win at least a trophy this season.
