Thunder sign Nigerian point guard Uchenna Iroegbu
Premier League basketball team Thunder has signed 28-year-old Nigerian point guard Uchenna Iroegbu. The 183cm (6ft) tall player, who weighs 82kg, had a fantastic season last year playing for Al Shamal in Qatar’s QBL league. Iroegbu impressed with an average of 27.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 2 steals per game over 9 matches.
In the 2023-24 season, Iroegbu received several top honors, including Player of the Year, Import Player of the Year, and Guard of the Year by Asia-Basket.com. He also played 6 games in the West Asia Super League, where he continued to shine with averages of 24 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.8 steals per game.
Before his time in Qatar, Iroegbu played for Seydou Legacy Athletique Club Conakry in Guinea. He also represented Nigeria in the FIBA World Cup 2023 African Qualifiers, where he averaged 9.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
Iroegbu brings plenty of international experience to Thunder, having played professionally in Spain, the NBA G League, Nigeria, and now Qatar. He also made it to the finals of the Qatari League in 2023.
A graduate of Stony Brook University in 2018, Iroegbu is set to enter his seventh season as a professional player. He also spent two years at the College of Southern Idaho before starting his basketball career.
