Tim Henman Slams Booing of Novak Djokovic at Australian Open

British tennis legend Tim Henman has criticised the Australian Open fans who booed Novak Djokovic last month, calling their actions “indefensible”.

Djokovic was forced to retire during his semi-final match against Alexander Zverev, missing out on the chance to win his 25th Grand Slam title. Throughout the tournament, he faced constant jeers from the crowd, and the boos continued as he left the Rod Laver Arena with a hamstring injury.

Henman, speaking to Mirror Sport, stated that there was no excuse for the crowd’s behaviour. He said, “For someone going for their 11th Australian Open title, to pull out after a set, he’s obviously in a bad way. For him to be booed in that moment is pretty indefensible.”

While Henman acknowledged that Djokovic’s sometimes abrasive on-court attitude might attract negativity, he added, “He absolutely doesn’t deserve to be booed off court after he’s had to retire.”

Henman also reflected on Djokovic’s desire for the same admiration that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal receive. “He’s always craved the affection shown to Federer and Nadal,” he said. “But you look at what he’s achieved, and he’s phenomenal.”

Djokovic has always had a complicated relationship with fans. His fierce competitiveness and self-confidence have earned him both devoted followers and vocal critics. After being deported from Australia in January 2022 due to his unvaccinated status, Djokovic’s stance on bodily autonomy further polarised opinions about him.

Despite the criticism, Djokovic remains determined and continues to fight for more titles. However, with injuries mounting and younger competitors rising, 2025 could be his last chance to add another Grand Slam to his collection.
