‘ Time to move on ‘ – Jose Pesiero insists he will not return as Super Eagles coach
Jose Peseiro has cleared the air regarding rumours that he will return as head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles following the expiration of his contract on February 29, 2024.
Recall that Pesiero announced he has left the Nigeria National team job on March 1.
In a recent interview, Peseiro insisted his time with the Super Eagles has ended despite speculation suggesting that the Nigeria Football Federation wanted him to continue as manager until after the 2026 World Cup, but he opted not to renew his contract due to financial reasons.
When asked if he would reconsider coaching the Super Eagles despite announcing his departure, Peseiro reiterated that his work with the team was complete, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to coach such talented players.
“As I said, my work with the Super Eagles is over. It was gratifying to coach players of such quality, with my staff we managed to do well in this sense, but the time has come to move on to another project,” Peseiro said in an interview with SPORTSITALIA.
During his tenure, Peseiro oversaw twenty-two games with the Super Eagles, registering eleven wins, four draws, and seven losses, earning a second place finish at the 2023 AFCON before exiting the role.
Also, Jose Peseiro weighed in on the future of Nigerian star, Victor Osimhen, predicting intense competition among top European clubs for the striker’s services in the upcoming summer transfer window.
“Victor is a formidable footballer. Even though he only scored one goal, he was very important to the success the Super Eagles had in the Africa Cup of Nations. A true team player who fought until the last minute, in search of victory. I think he will have several clubs interested at the end of the season and only he and his club will be able to decide his future.”
