Tinubu Says Super Falcons’ Win Was So Exciting the First Lady Stopped Cooking to Watch
President Bola Tinubu has shared a funny story about how the Super Falcons’ big win in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final got everyone, including his wife, very excited.
Speaking on Monday at a special event held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to celebrate the team, President Tinubu said the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was so drawn into the match that she stopped cooking just to watch the game.
“I honestly didn’t want to watch the match,” Tinubu said with a smile. “I didn’t want to get high blood pressure. But the TV was on, and when it became 2-0, I started getting upset and restless.”
The room burst into laughter when the President added: “You almost made me more annoyed because the First Lady, who was in the kitchen, nearly forgot about my dinner. She never watches football – only when the girls are playing. But when the final whistle blew, there was joy across the country.”
President Tinubu praised the players and coaching staff, saying their performance brought the country together and lifted everyone’s spirits. He described their WAFCON win as “a victory full of hope, courage, and national pride.”
“You made us happy, not heartbroken. You’ve inspired millions – especially young girls – who now believe their dreams can come true,” he told the team.
