Tobi Amusan aims for historic four gold medals at African Games

World 100mH record holder Tobi Amusan is poised to etch her name in history by targeting an unprecedented achievement of securing four gold medals at the ongoing African Games in Ghana.

As per the roster released by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), the former world champion is slated to participate in four events: the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, and her signature event – the 100m hurdles.

While Amusan’s involvement in multiple events during an Olympic year may seem demanding, her coach likely meticulously deliberated on this strategy, considering its potential contribution to her preparations for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Nevertheless, Amusan stands a significant chance of medaling in all four events. If successful, she would become the first woman in African Games history to accomplish such a remarkable feat.

Despite Amusan’s limited experience in the 100m and 200m at senior international competitions, her outstanding form this season indicates her potential to contend for medals in these events.

Last year, the 26-year-old sprinter clocked a remarkable personal best of 11.10 seconds in the 100m. If she can replicate or surpass this performance, her contention for a podium finish or even a gold medal is evident. Her prowess in the 100m hurdles makes her the frontrunner to extend Nigeria’s unbeaten streak in the event at the Games.

The 4x100m relay team, with Amusan as a member, is also poised to vie for a fourth consecutive title.

With Amusan’s recent record-breaking performances, including setting a new African Record in the 60m hurdles during the indoor season, her enhanced speed and form augur well for Nigeria’s medal prospects at the Games.

Amusan has the opportunity to shatter several records at the African Games, including becoming the second Nigerian woman to win three consecutive titles in the same event (women’s 100mH), breaking her own Games Record in the 100m hurdles, and clinching Nigeria’s first-ever four-medal haul at the Games.

Her success would not only solidify her status as one of Nigeria’s most decorated athletes but also restore the country’s dominance in women’s sprints at the continental event.
