Toni Payne Scores First Everton Goal in Defeat to Arsenal

Super Falcons forward Toni Payne scored her first goal for Everton in their 3-1 loss to Arsenal in the Women’s Super League (WSL) at Walton Hall Park on Friday night.

Despite the defeat, Payne’s goal was a key moment, marking her first strike for the Toffees since joining in July 2024. The Nigerian international moved to Everton after six years with Spanish club Sevilla and is gradually making her mark in the WSL.

Arsenal took the lead in the 24th minute when Alessia Russo finished at the near post after a low cross from Kim Little. Everton responded well, and Payne equalised in the 36th minute. She reacted quickly to a deflected shot inside the box and fired past Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger.

The goal came from intense pressing by Katja Snoeijs, who won possession and set up Kelly Gago on the right wing. Gago’s pass into the box took a deflection and fell kindly for Payne, who made no mistake with the finish.

Everton fought hard in the second half, with goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan making key saves to keep them in the game. However, Arsenal regained the lead in the 63rd minute when a cross from Emily Fox deflected off Martina Fernandez and rolled into the net.

Russo sealed the win for Arsenal in stoppage time, rounding Brosnan and slotting into an empty net to complete her brace.

Despite the result, Payne’s performance was a positive sign for Everton as she continues to settle in the WSL. The Toffees will now focus on their next match against Crystal Palace at Walton Hall Park on 22 March.
