Top five candidates for Super Eagles coaching job after Peseiro exit

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) will in the coming weeks/months appoint a new coach for the Super Eagles, after the exit of Jose Peseiro.

Here are the top five candidates for the vacant Nigerian job:

  1. Emmanuel Amunike: He is the favourite for the job at the moment. With a stellar playing career and successful coaching stints, particularly at the U17 level, Amunike brings both experience and familiarity with Nigerian football. His tactical acumen and attacking philosophy align well with the aspirations of the Nigerian team.
  2. Sunday Oliseh: Despite a tumultuous previous tenure, Oliseh’s understanding of Nigerian football and his ability to nurture young talents could make him a viable option if past issues with the NFF can be resolved. His return could signify a fresh start for the team.
  3. Ndubuisi Egbo: Egbo’s historic achievement of leading a European team to a league title brings a unique perspective. His experience both as a player and a coach, coupled with success in Europe, could offer the Super Eagles a fresh approach and new ideas.
  4. Laurent Blanc: Blanc’s distinguished career as both a player and a coach, along with his international success, makes him a highly appealing option. While he previously applied for the role, his pedigree and experience could inject a winning mentality and professionalism into the Nigerian team.
  5. Pedro Gonçalves: Gonçalves’ success with Angola, particularly in qualifying for and performing well in the AFCON, demonstrates his ability to achieve results with a national team. His strategic insight and track record of fostering winning mentalities make him a strong contender.

Each candidate brings unique strengths and experiences to the table. The NFF will need to consider factors such as coaching style, compatibility with the team’s culture, and ability to work within financial constraints. Ultimately, the chosen one will have to mobilize the 2023 AFCON winning Eagles and make of the a set that can claim gold at the 2025 Nations Cup, plus a 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket.
