Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli for about £16.3m, making him their first signing under Ange Postecoglou.
Spurs were in the market for a new goalkeeper after captain Hugo Lloris revealed that he wishes to leave the club this summer after 11 years as their first-choice goalkeeper.
Tottenham approached Brentford for 27-year-old David Raya, who is entering the final year of his contract with the Bees. They agreed personal terms with the Spaniard but decided that £40m was too expensive for a goalkeeper in the final year of his contract.
Postecoglou’s side then turned to Empoli goalkeeper Vicario, who has joined them for less than half of Raya’s cost on a five-year deal.
Guglielmo Vicario becomes the first new signing for Tottenham this summer and the second player whom they have negotiated for after they negotiated a permanent deal for Dean Kulusevski with Juventus earlier.
