Troost-Ekong Urges Super Eagles to Seize AFCON 2025 Moment Ahead of Algeria Clash

Nigeria’s former captain, William Troost-Ekong, has urged the Super Eagles to make the most of their chance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as they prepare for Saturday’s quarter-final clash against Algeria in Marrakesh.
Nigeria will face the Desert Warriors, led by Riyad Mahrez, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. Both teams have been in strong form at the tournament.
The Super Eagles have won all four of their matches so far. They recorded victories over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in the group stage before producing an impressive 4-0 win against Mozambique in the round of 16. Algeria have also been flawless, winning all their games and boasting the best defensive record in the competition.
The quarter-final holds special meaning for Troost-Ekong, who retired from international football in December, just before the tournament began. The former Watford defender spent 10 years with the Super Eagles and captained the team during his career.
Although he is no longer part of the squad, Troost-Ekong says his support for the team remains strong. He admitted that stepping away from international football was an emotional decision but said he feels proud watching the current team perform with confidence and belief.
Troost-Ekong praised the players for their hunger, team spirit and quality, adding that the Super Eagles have what it takes to go all the way in the competition and continue to make Nigerians proud.
Nigeria’s journey to the last eight has been built on discipline, control and growing confidence, but Algeria are expected to provide their toughest test yet. The North African side are experienced, well organised and know how to perform on the big stage.
History, however, favours Nigeria. In 18 previous AFCON quarter-final appearances, the Super Eagles have only failed to reach the semi-finals once, a defeat that came in 2008.
