Tuchel Casts Doubt on Foden’s World Cup Spot

Thomas Tuchel has admitted that Phil Foden is not certain to be included in his final England squad for the upcoming World Cup.

The England national football team manager made the comment after Tuesday’s defeat to Japan national football team, where Foden featured in a false nine role but failed to make a strong impact.

“Well, it’s not a guarantee that he will come,” Tuchel said when asked about the midfielder’s chances of making the squad.

The 25 year old was one of the few players to start both matches in England’s final camp before the squad selection, but struggled to influence the game in the absence of Harry Kane.

Tuchel praised Foden’s attitude in training but noted a contrast during matches. “He came into camp with the brightest smile and was excellent in training, but he struggles to show it fully on the pitch,” the German coach said.

Foden’s recent form at Manchester City has also raised concerns. He has started only four of the club’s last 15 matches and has not scored since December, after previously enjoying a run of six goals in five games.

During the match against Japan, Tuchel replaced Foden with striker Dominic Solanke in the 59th minute as England searched for more attacking threat.

Tuchel is expected to submit his final 24 man squad before the deadline set by FIFA on May 30. England will begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia national football team on June 17 in Arlington, Texas.
