Umar Abdullahi says goodbye to Akwa United, unveiled as new Gombe United Technical Adviser

Coach Umar Abdullahi has bid farewell to Akwa United FC and has been unveiled as the new Technical Adviser for Gombe United FC.

On March 3, 2025, Umar posted an emotional goodbye on his Facebook, reflecting on his time with Akwa United, where he had worked for nearly a decade. He thanked the club and its supporters, expressing his gratitude for the experiences he gained, including a coaching course in Brazil. He also mentioned the support he received from his late wife and from his mentor, Elder Paul Bassey, the Commissioner for Sports in Akwa Ibom.

Umar’s farewell message read, “End of an Era. From 2016 to January 30, 2025, heavy to say goodbye to the Akwa United family. Thanks to all Akwaibomites for your love. To my Daddy, my boss, and my mentor, Elder Paul Bassey, I really appreciate everything. Only God can reward you. Akwa United, I wish you all the best. I will really miss you so much.”

Umar left Akwa United in January 2025 after new head coach Kennedy Boboye made changes to the coaching staff.

On March 4, 2025, Gombe United FC announced Umar Abdullahi as their new Technical Adviser. This follows the departure of Coach Bala Nkiyu. Gombe United’s General Manager, Alh. Anas Bamusa, said that Umar’s appointment was based on his strong track record and shared vision for the future of the club.

Bamusa explained, “Coach Umar’s appointment is based on his experience and the football philosophy that fits what our fans love. His previous work with Coach Aliyu, and the improvements he made at Akwa United, show he has the ability to rebuild and strengthen our team.”

In his first statement as Gombe United’s new Technical Adviser, Umar said, “I am happy to be here. Gombe United is a club with a unique culture, and I truly appreciate the warm welcome. We know the challenges ahead, but I believe in finding solutions, not making excuses. My priority is to build a strong team that delivers results. The team comes first before any individual.”

Before joining Gombe United, Umar had worked at Akwa United from 2016 to 2025, where he helped the team avoid relegation last season with key victories, including an important away win over Plateau United and a draw against Gombe United. His experience makes him a great addition to Gombe United as they work to improve their squad.
