Umar Sadiq Helps Valencia End 17-Year Wait for Win at Real Madrid
Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq finally ended his poor run against Real Madrid as Valencia claimed a dramatic 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday – their first victory at the famous stadium in 17 years.
Sadiq, who joined Valencia on loan from Real Sociedad in January, had faced Real Madrid three times in the past without a win or a goal. But this match marked a big moment for the Super Eagles forward, who played a key role in the historic win for Los Che.
Starting in attack for Rubén Baraja’s team, Sadiq – with four goals in his first nine league games for Valencia – almost scored in the second half, but was denied by a brilliant save from Madrid goalkeeper Fran González.
Valencia went ahead early in the game when Guinea international Mouctar Diakhaby scored with a powerful header from a corner in the 15th minute.
Real Madrid hit back after the break. Vinícius Júnior, who had earlier missed a penalty, scored from close range after a flick from Jude Bellingham.
Sadiq was taken off after an hour and replaced by Rafa Mir. That change proved important. In stoppage time, Mir broke down the right wing and set up Hugo Duro, who calmly finished to give Valencia a famous win and silence the home fans.
The result is a big blow to Real Madrid’s title hopes, as they now sit three points behind leaders Barcelona. For Valencia, it ends a long wait for success at the Bernabéu – their last win there was back in 2008.
Although Sadiq didn’t score, he impressed with his hard work and strong performance, finally celebrating his first-ever career win against Real Madrid.
