Uyo Township Stadium to have Olympic-size Swimming pool as remodeling work resumes
Less than two weeks after the inauguration of Eket Stadium, Akwa Ibom is set to have an Olympic-Size Swimming pool within the remodelled Uyo Township Stadium as work resumes.
The Uyo Township Stadium previously served as home ground for Akwa United FC, Akwa Starlet FC (now Dakkada FC), Ibom Youths FC and Ibom Angels FC before the construction of the 35,000 capacity Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
According to the Akwa Ibom State Government, the Remodelled Uyo Township Stadium will have an Olympic-Size Swimming pool as part of new innovations expected at the Sports complex.
Sir Monday Ebong Uko, Honourable Commissioner for Youths and Sports Akwa Ibom State while conducting journalists round the facility today assured the Governor Udom Emmanuel led administration is committed towards completing the project.
On the inspiration behind the Olympic-size Swimming Pool project, the Sports Commissioner said “In the entire state, we do not have an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
” Most of the time, when we go for sports festivals, swimming comes with a lot of medals and Akwa Ibom never had a place where athletes can practice and win these medals.
“The moment this swimming pool is completed, I am very certain our position in the national sports festival will improve,” he concluded.
Akwa Ibom State is already a choice destination for sporting events in Nigeria and will attract even more competitions when remodeling work on the Uyo Township Stadium is completed.
