Venus Williams Indian Wells Return ends in first Round

Venus Williams falls in Indian Wells as Parry advances

Venus Williams’s return to the BNP Paribas Open ended in the first round after the American legend was defeated by Diane Parry in a three-set battle.

The 45 years old received a wildcard entry into the tournament in Indian Wells but was beaten 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1 by the 23 years old French player, who is currently ranked No.111 in the world.

Williams showed flashes of her fighting spirit during the match. After dropping the opening set, the seven-time Grand Slam champion responded strongly in the second, pushing the set into a tiebreak and leveling the contest.

However, Parry regained control in the deciding set, breaking early and pulling away to secure the victory and move into the second round, where she will face Madison Keys.

The match marked Williams’ 10th appearance at Indian Wells and came exactly 30 years after she made her debut at the tournament in 1996 as a 15-year-old rising star.

Her return to the WTA Tour has been challenging. Williams entered the event on a seven match losing streak and has now lost eight consecutive singles matches. Her only victory since returning to competition came at the Washington Open last year.

Earlier this season, Williams also competed at the Australian Open, becoming the oldest woman to appear in the singles main draw at the tournament. She later featured at the ATX Open in Austin but again exited in the first round.

Despite the result, Williams continues to show her determination to compete on tour more than three decades after her professional debut.
