Victor Boniface nets fine double as Bayer Leverkusen cruise to derby win
Nigerian striker staking claim for Super Eagles invite
Nigerian striker Victor Boniface scored a brace for Bayer Leverkusen as they strolled to a comfortable 3-0 win away from home against rivals Borussia Monchengladbach in their Bundesliga clash.
Following an impressive showing capped off with an assist in his league debut against RB Leipzig last weekend, Boniface once again led the line for Xabi Alonso’s side in their derby clash.
Boniface needed only 18 minutes to score in his second league appearance for his new side, powering home a fine header from inside the box after Alejandro Grimaldo headed the ball into his path following a cross from Granit Xhaka.
Bayer Leverkusen doubled their advantage on the cusp of half-time, with German international Jonathan Tah scoring for the second successive week off a Jonas Hofmann assist.
The visitors did not let up after the break and scored a third goal in the 53rd minute when talented attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz played a delightful through pass into the path of Boniface, and the 22-year-old applied a deft finish to double his tally and put the game beyond the reach of the home side.
Boniface lasted 88 minutes before he was replaced by Colombian youngster Gustavo Puerta for the closing minutes of the encounter. The Nigerian striker has enjoyed a great start to life in Germany with his new club.
