Victor Boniface on target for Bayer Leverkusen in brilliant derby win
Alonso's side retain top spot in Bundesliga following win
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface scored his seventh Bundesliga goal of the season as Bayer Leverkusen defeated rivals FC Cologne 3-0 to win their derby and remain atop the league standings.
Bayer Leverkusen have begun the season excellently under Xabi Alonso, remaining unbeaten throughout the opening six matches. They were up against a Cologne side that has picked up only one point since the start of the seasob
Alonso’s side followed the script perfectly when they opened the scoring through forward Jonas Hofmann, who converted a pass from Florian Wirtz in the 22nd minute.
Ten minutes later, they doubled their advantage as one wing-back found the other, when Alejandro Grimaldo assisted Jeremie Frimpong to score his fourth goal of the season with an easy tap-in.
Former Union Saint-Gilloise striker Boniface added his name to the scoresheet in the 67th minute with a composed finish after an unselfish square ball from goalscorer Hofmann. The striker was taken off after 81 minutes with the job done at the BayArena.
Boniface has now recorded seven goals and two assists in seven league appearances for Bayer Leverkusen this season.
