Victor Boniface Responds Calmly to Criticism from Werder Bremen Coach

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has given a calm response to recent criticism from Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen.

The Nigerian forward, who joined Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen during the 2025 summer transfer window, has faced scrutiny for his performances this season.

Boniface posted a short but meaningful message on his Instagram story that read, “Step by step,” alongside a photo of himself — a clear sign that he is taking a patient and focused approach as he looks to find form in his new team.

His post came just days after Steffen publicly urged him to improve his performances and be more effective in attack.

Steffen had first questioned Boniface’s positioning after Bremen’s match against Freiburg on matchday four, saying:

“He was too everywhere for me. He should definitely stay more central. It wasn’t how I wanted it.”

The coach later commented again following the game against Mainz 05, adding:

“He tried to hold onto the ball up front. Today I thought to myself: Come on, he can do even better.”

The manager’s repeated remarks have sparked debate among fans, with some calling for patience as Boniface continues to adapt to his new surroundings.

The 24-year-old forward arrived in Bremen with high expectations after winning the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award at Bayer Leverkusen. However, he is yet to reach those heights, recording just one assist in seven league appearances and still searching for his first goal for the club.

Fitness challenges and adjusting to a new tactical system have contributed to his slow start, but Boniface’s message suggests he remains determined to rise above the criticism — one step at a time.
