Victor Boniface shines in Bundesliga debut win over RB Leipzig
Nigerian star Victor Boniface had a productive first outing in a Bayer Leverkusen shirt in Bundesliga as they defeated RB Leipzig 3-2 in their season opener at the BayArena.
Having marked his debut last weekend with a goal in the DFB Pokal, Boniface was once more trusted by manager Xabi Alonso to lead the line for his side. The 22-year-old wasted no time to make his presence felt, providing a fine assist for Jeremie Frimpong to open the scoring after 24 minutes.
Bayer Leverkusen doubled their advantage in the 35th minute through defender Jonathan Tah before Dani Olmo reduced the arrears for Leipzig four minutes later.
The home side restored their two-goal buffer when Florian Wirtz scored shortly after the hour mark, but Lois Openda added his name to the scoresheet for Leipzig on his Bundesliga debut to ensure the match ended 3-2.
Boniface was a constant threat throughout his 89 minutes on the pitch before he was replaced by Nadiem Amiri. His combination of pace, technical ability and brute force made him a problem for Leipzig, a fate many more teams will face this season.
