Victor Boniface to miss AFCON following muscle injury
As the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draws near, the Super Eagles are facing a setback with the news that striker Victor Boniface has sustained an injury during training, putting his availability for the tournament in doubt.
Nigeria’s national team, led by coach Jose Peseiro, is gearing up for the AFCON in Ivory Coast with hopes of claiming a fourth African crown.
Boniface, who has been a standout performer for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, earned his spot in the 25-man squad after an impressive start to the season with ten goals and seven assists in 16 appearances.
The injury to Boniface comes at a crucial time, as he was expected to play a significant role alongside Victor Osimhen in the Super Eagles’ attacking lineup.
However, the muscle injury has forced him to miss the team’s preparatory fixtures against local Abu Dhabi club Al Gharib and Guinea.
The extent of Boniface’s injury is yet to be determined, but it is crucial for him to regain full fitness before Nigeria’s opening game against Eq uatorial Guinea on January 14.
In a post on his twitter handle on Tuesday, January 8, 2024, Boniface wished the Eagles well at the AFCON, a message that seemingly confirms he will miss the tournament.
