Victor Ikpeba Criticises Super Eagles After Loss to Rwanda
Former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba has expressed disappointment with Nigeria’s performance after their 2-1 loss to Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. The match marked Rwanda’s first-ever victory over the three-time African champions.
Nigeria took the lead through Samuel Chukwueze in the 59th minute, but goals from Ange Mutsinzi and Innocent Nshuti in the 72nd and 75th minutes turned the game around for the Amavubi.
Ikpeba Reacts to the Defeat
Speaking on SuperSport TV, Ikpeba, a member of Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON-winning team and 1996 Olympic gold medal squad, criticised the team’s performance, saying some players are not good enough for the national team.
“I am disappointed with the result and the performance of the team,” Ikpeba said. “This was a chance for other players in the squad to prove they deserve to be part of the national team, but they didn’t turn up.
“They didn’t perform well for themselves or for the fans. There is a need to bring in new players to create more competition in the team,” he added.
Looking Ahead to AFCON
Despite the loss, the Super Eagles have secured qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. However, Ikpeba’s comments raise questions about the team’s readiness and the need for improvements ahead of the tournament.
