Victor Osimhen arrives in Nigeria ahead of AFCON qualifiers
Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has arrived in Nigeria ahead of the crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. The 25-year-old forward touched down in the early hours of Thursday morning, ready to join the national team in Uyo.
Osimhen’s arrival follows the completion of his loan move from Napoli to Turkish champions Galatasaray, ending a long and dramatic summer transfer saga. The Nigerian striker had been linked with several top European clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Chelsea, and Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli. However, Napoli remained unsatisfied with the offers on the table, leading to Osimhen’s eventual move to Galatasaray after the main European transfer window had closed.
Despite being close to a move to Chelsea, Osimhen reportedly rejected the wages offered by the Premier League side, resulting in a failed deal. Galatasaray capitalized on the situation, securing his services on a season-long loan deal.
Osimhen’s participation in the AFCON qualifiers was initially delayed as he had to finalize his move to Turkey. According to reports, the striker had reached out to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen to update them on his transfer situation. He was granted permission to handle his business before joining the team.
Osimhen is now set to link up with his Super Eagles teammates in Uyo as they prepare for the qualifiers. His presence will be a significant boost to the squad, as the reigning African Best Player looks to continue his fine form on the international stage. The Galatasaray forward is expected to lead the line for Nigeria as they aim to secure qualification for AFCON 2025.
