Victor Osimhen arrives in Uyo ahead of AFCON qualifier vs Benin Republic
Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has arrived in Uyo ahead of Nigeria’s crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier against Benin Republic.
The 25-year-old forward touched down in Nigeria earlier on Thursday morning before making his way to Uyo aboard Ibom Air, where he is expected to train with the rest of the squad this evening.
Osimhen’s arrival comes shortly after completing a high-profile loan move from Napoli to Turkish champions Galatasaray, capping off a long and dramatic summer transfer saga. The striker had been heavily linked with major European clubs like Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Chelsea, and Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli. However, Napoli was unsatisfied with the offers presented, leading to Osimhen’s eventual move to Galatasaray after the European transfer window had closed.
While Osimhen was close to a move to Chelsea, the Nigerian international reportedly turned down the wages offered by the Premier League side, leading to the deal falling through. Galatasaray then capitalised on the situation, securing the striker on a season-long loan deal. Despite the delay caused by his transfer dealings, Osimhen had earlier reached out to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen to update them on his situation and was granted permission to join the national team later.
Now set to reunite with his Super Eagles teammates, Osimhen’s arrival in Uyo is expected to provide a significant boost to Nigeria’s chances.
