Victor Osimhen’s clubmate Tosin Demehin confident Super Falcons can win 2024 WAFCON
Super Falcons defender Tosin Demehin who plays for Galatasaray, same club as Victor Osimhen, believes Nigeria has the right mix of players to reclaim the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in 2024. The tournament will be held in Morocco, where Nigeria last finished fourth in 2022 — their second-worst result ever.
Demehin, a key figure in Nigeria’s defence, sees WAFCON as an opportunity to restore the Super Falcons’ dominance in African women’s football.
“WAFCON is very important, not just to me but to the whole continent,” Demehin said in an interview with SportsBoom. “I’m excited to play in the tournament for the first time and can’t wait to be part of the action.”
The Galatasaray defender is focused on helping Nigeria reclaim their place as Africa’s top team.
“My goal for WAFCON 2024 is for us to have a great tournament and win the title,” she said. “We want to dominate African women’s football again, and I’ll do everything I can to help the team achieve that.”
Demehin has quickly adapted to life at Galatasaray since joining the Turkish club from Reims. Her solid performances have made her a standout player.
The 21-year-old first caught attention at the 2022 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, where she impressed despite Nigeria’s early exit. She later earned promotion to the Super Falcons, becoming a regular starter and representing Nigeria at the Women’s World Cup and the Olympics.
With teams like Zambia, Morocco, and defending champions South Africa improving rapidly, Demehin acknowledges the competition but remains confident in Nigeria’s chances.
The 15th edition of WAFCON will be held in Morocco for the second time in a row. Nigeria, the most successful team in the tournament’s history with 11 titles, will aim to reclaim the crown and reassert their dominance in African women’s football.
