Vincent Enyeama present as Ex-Akwa United/Ibom Stars players, consolidated All-stars honour his late father
Former Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama took the ceremonial kickoff at a novelty football match played in honor of his late father, Coach Phillip Enyeama, who will be laid to rest this weekend in Akwa Ibom State. SportsRation exclusively reports.
The match, held at the Uyo Township Stadium on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, saw ex-players from Akwa United and Ibom Stars FC face off against Consolidated All-stars. The game ended in a 3-1 victory for the former Akwa United and Ibom Stars players.
The late Coach Phillip Enyeama was a pivotal figure in his son’s meteoric rise in football, providing the tutelage that helped Vincent start his career at Ibom Stars.
During his nearly 20-year senior career, Vincent Enyeama played for several clubs, including Ibom Stars, Enyimba, Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Bnei Yehuda, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Lille, and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
He was also a key member of the Nigeria national team from 2002 until October 2015, serving as its captain from 2013 until his retirement from international football in 2015. With 101 caps, he was Nigeria’s most capped player until November 2021 when Ahmed Musa surpassed him.
Late Coach Phillip Enyeama, who passed away in February 2024, will be buried this weekend.
The novelty match served as a fitting tribute to a man who had a significant impact on Nigerian football through his dedication to coaching and mentoring young players, including his son, Vincent.
