Vodoo Allegations: Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle makes U-TURN
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has apologised to the players and officials of the Democratic Republic of Congo after accusing them of using voodoo.
Nigeria lost 4–3 on penalties to the Leopards in their 2026 World Cup playoff final on Sunday.
The match finished 1–1 after 120 minutes. Frank Onyeka scored early for Nigeria, before Mechak Elia equalised for DR Congo.
During the penalty shootout, Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon and Semi Ajayi all missed for the Super Eagles. After the final kick, Chelle was seen arguing with members of the DR Congo bench.
Following the match, Chelle told reporters that someone in the opposition technical area had used voodoo during the shootout.
Later, he posted an apology on Instagram, writing:
“Football is full of emotions. After the match, I reacted angrily during an argument with a member of the DRC staff who tried to enter my technical area.
“I never meant to blame the Congolese people or their staff, whom I respect.
“I am disappointed by our exit but proud of my players. Congratulations to Congo, who were the better team.
“Their fans showed great passion, just like ours. We must move forward together for what comes next.”
