WATCH: What happened the last time Nigeria played Spain at Stade de la Beaujoire

On Sunday evening, the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes will again be the venue for a high-stakes football clash between Nigeria and Spain, echoing the excitement of their historic 1998 FIFA World Cup encounter.

In June 1998, this stadium hosted a thrilling match between Spain and Nigeria. Spain initially took the lead with a Fernando Hierro free-kick in the 21st minute. However, Nigeria’s Mutiu Adepoju quickly equalized with a header three minutes later. Spain regained the lead with a goal from Raul Gonzalez early in the second half.

The match took a dramatic turn when Nigeria’s Garba Lawal’s cross was accidentally turned into an own goal by Spain’s goalkeeper Andoni Zubizaretta in the 73rd minute. Five minutes later, Sunday Oliseh delivered one of the World Cup’s most iconic goals with a stunning long-range shot, securing a 3-2 victory for Nigeria.

Now, on July 28, 2024, the Super Falcons of Nigeria will face Spain once again in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament during the 33rd Olympiad. Spain, the reigning World Cup champions, are currently leading Group C with a 2-1 win over Japan. Nigeria, having lost 1-0 to Brazil in their opening match, needs a victory to enhance their chances of advancing to the knockout stages.
