Werder Bremen Considering Positional Change for Felix Agu

Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune has hinted at a possible new role for Felix Agu, suggesting the versatile full-back could be used further up the pitch ahead of the Bundesliga clash with RB Leipzig.

The 26-year-old has impressed in training with both his defensive work and attacking contributions. Agu has been involved in several scoring situations this week and even scored, showing a different side to his game.

Thioune confirmed that the experiments are part of a wider tactical plan, not just a response to squad needs. “We’ve experimented a lot with Felix because I know how versatile he is and where he can bring quality to the team,” the Bremen boss said, highlighting Agu’s ability to influence matches in multiple positions.

Agu’s pace is a standout attribute, ranking second in sprint speed for the squad this season, just behind Justin Njinmah. Thioune noted the importance of that speed, adding, “That’s a skill that can help us in every phase of the game,” suggesting Agu could be used more aggressively in attack.

With Olivier Deman a key figure on the left flank, a direct replacement is unlikely. This opens the door for Agu to either move to the right wing or push forward on the left, forming an attacking partnership with Deman. Thioune referenced a recent friendly as an example: “We’re considering exactly that. He played on the left wing in the friendly against our U23 team because I believe it can work.”

Thioune kept the final decision under wraps ahead of the Leipzig game but stressed Agu’s importance. “If he’s fit and at 100 percent, then in my opinion he belongs on the pitch,” he said. “Now we have to decide where we’ll put him. But we won’t know that until Saturday, because I’m keeping that to myself until then.”

As Bremen prepare for their next fixture, Agu’s role could be key in shaping the team’s attacking strategy.
