What did Paul Onuachu say after his FIFA awards nomination?

Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu has shared his excitement after being nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award, which honours the best goal scored in a calendar year.

Onuachu’s stunning acrobatic backheel goal for Trabzonspor against Konyaspor last season earned him a spot among the nominees for the prestigious award. The goal, scored in the 85th minute, secured a dramatic 2-1 victory for Trabzonspor.

Speaking about the nomination, Onuachu expressed his gratitude to Trabzonspor fans for their unwavering support during his time at the club.

“I had wonderful days there. I always felt the incredible support of the fans. Their contribution to my success is great,” he said in an interview cited by Turkish outlet 61saat.

Onuachu’s goal is up against impressive strikes from other nominees, including Mohammed Kudus and Alejandro Garnacho.

The Nigerian striker had an outstanding spell in Turkey, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists in 25 matches for Trabzonspor. However, his stint at Southampton was less successful, failing to score in 12 appearances before returning to the Turkish club on loan.

As Onuachu returns to Southampton, his Puskás nomination is a bright spot in his career and a testament to his talent.
