What Eric Chelle said about Super Eagles job in his last interview as MC Oran manager
In his last interview as manager of MC Oran, Eric Chelle shared thoughts about getting the Super Eagles job, describing it as a “Once-in-a-Lifetime” chance.
Eric Chelle, the newly appointed head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has described his upcoming role as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” The 46-year-old Malian tactician is set to begin his tenure on Monday after parting ways with Algerian club MC Oran.
Chelle, who led MC Oran to a 1-0 Algerian Cup victory against Ittihad Setif in his final match, expressed deep gratitude to the club while acknowledging the allure of managing one of Africa’s most prestigious national teams.
Speaking during a post-match press conference, Chelle admitted the decision to leave MC Oran was emotional but necessary. “This is my last meeting with you, and it marks the end of my adventure here. From Monday, I will be in Nigeria to start a new chapter,” he said.
The coach revealed that MC Oran officials tried to persuade him to stay. However, he could not resist the opportunity to manage the Super Eagles. “The MCO officials insisted that I continue, but one cannot refuse to lead one of the best teams in Africa and the world,” Chelle added.
Chelle’s departure from MC Oran involved fulfilling a clause in his contract, which required him to repay a three-month advance for early termination. Despite this, the transition was amicable, with both parties reaching an agreement.
Chelle’s record at MC Oran includes six wins, two draws, and five losses in 13 matches since his appointment in October 2024. His departure comes as Nigeria prepares for crucial assignments, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Chelle’s appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sparked varied reactions. While some pundits express optimism about his potential, others are cautious, pointing to his limited experience at the highest level of international football.
However, Chelle remains confident in his ability to harness the Super Eagles’ wealth of talent. “Let’s go to the World Cup,” he said, outlining his ambition to guide Nigeria to success on the global stage.
As he prepares to take charge, Chelle’s focus will be on building a cohesive team capable of meeting the expectations of one of Africa’s most passionate footballing nations.
