What NBA history did Yuki Kawamura make with Memphis Grizzlies
The Memphis Grizzlies have signed Japanese guard Yuki Kawamura to a two-way contract ahead of the NBA season. This move came after the Grizzlies promoted Scotty Pippen Jr. to a standard contract following Derrick Rose’s retirement.
Although Kawamura, who stands at 5-foot-8, isn’t expected to play many minutes, he has already become a fan favourite. A star in Japan, Kawamura’s large following now extends to Memphis, bringing excitement to Grizzlies fans.
Kawamura made his NBA debut on Friday against the Houston Rockets, playing three minutes in the Grizzlies’ 128-108 loss. The following night, he made his home debut at FedExForum against the Orlando Magic, receiving a loud ovation from the crowd.
Drew Hill of The Daily Memphian captured the moment, writing:
“Good morning, Japan. The crowd in Memphis is going WILD for Yuki Kawamura’s first appearance at FedExForum.”
Kawamura’s debut was historic as he became the fourth Japanese player to play in the NBA, as shared by NBA Japan:
“The fourth Japanese player in the NBA is born ”
After the game against Orlando, Kawamura shared a heartwarming moment with Grizzlies star Ja Morant, embracing him on the court.
“It was a special moment,” Kawamura told reporters. “Ja is my great friend. He is my guy.”
While Kawamura missed his first two shots, he remains focused on making his mark. The Grizzlies’ next game will be on Sunday against the Chicago Bulls, giving Kawamura another chance to score his first NBA points.
