What you should know about the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

The 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is underway in the Dominican Republic, bringing together some of the world’s best young football talent. Here are key things to know about this year’s tournament:

1. Tournament Format

The competition features 16 teams, divided into four groups of four. The top two teams from each group will move on to the Quarterfinals on October 26 and 27. Winners from the quarterfinals will advance to the Semifinals on October 30 and 31. The Third-Place Match and the Final are scheduled for November 3 in Santo Domingo.

2. Teams and New Participants

Participating nations include a mix of returning giants and debutants. This year’s lineup features:

  • From Africa: Nigeria, Kenya, and Zambia
  • From Asia: South Korea, North Korea, and Japan
  • From Europe: Spain (defending champions), England, and Poland
  • From South America: Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil
  • From North America (Concacaf): USA, Mexico, and host Dominican Republic
  • From Oceania: New Zealand

The Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Kenya, and Poland are making their first appearances in the tournament, while eight teams return from the 2022 edition.

3. Where Matches Will Be Played

All matches will take place at two stadiums:

  • Felix Sanchez Stadium in Santo Domingo
  • CFC Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros

These two cities are about 105 miles apart.
