Which English Premier League Club has the most supporters In Nigeria?
Chelsea Football Club holds the title of having the most supporters in Nigeria, and much of this support grew during Jose Mourinho’s first stint as manager in 2004. Mourinho’s arrival brought an exciting era of success for Chelsea, attracting fans across the globe, and Nigeria was no exception.
When Chelsea signed Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel, the club’s popularity skyrocketed in Nigeria. Mikel became a household name, and many Nigerians shifted allegiance to Chelsea. Additionally, the club’s consistent signing of African stars such as Victor Moses (Nigeria), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast), Michael Essien (Ghana), and Salomon Kalou (Ivory Coast) further cemented their support.
Despite Chelsea’s recent struggles, the loyalty of Nigerian fans has remained remarkable. Many continue to back the club passionately, and with the team enjoying a better season, even fans who had lost interest are now returning to loudly chant “The Blues” on matchdays.
Other Popular EPL Clubs in Nigeria
Following Chelsea, Manchester United is the second most supported English Premier League club in Nigeria. Before the early 2000s, Manchester United dominated as Nigeria’s favourite, driven by the immense success under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Third on the list is Arsenal. The Gunners enjoy significant support, particularly in Akwa Ibom State, where Arsenal fans have an official fan club that meets on matchdays to watch games, eat, and socialise. Liverpool comes fourth, while Manchester City, my favourite club, rounds out the top five. I have been a Manchester City fan since 2011, witnessing the club’s rise to dominance in the EPL.
Hopes for Nigerian Football
While Nigerians are deeply passionate about the English Premier League, there is a growing call for this enthusiasm to be channelled toward the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). I am hopeful to see the same energy devoted to supporting local clubs.
