Who is Glory Edet the First Nigerian to Win CAF Women’s Champions League
Nigerian defender Glory Edet has made history as the first Nigerian to win the CAF Women’s Champions League, achieving this milestone with TP Mazembe, a club based in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Edet’s journey to glory wasn’t without challenges. She suffered a knee injury during TP Mazembe’s opening 2-0 victory against the University of the Western Cape. The injury sidelined her for the rest of the tournament, but her dedication to her team remained unwavering.
After undergoing successful surgery in Casablanca, Edet started her recovery journey, focusing on returning stronger.
Before her move to TP Mazembe, Edet was a standout player with Bayelsa Queens in Nigeria, where she helped her team win the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL). Her move to the Congolese club marked the start of her record-breaking run, culminating in her CAF Women’s Champions League success.
Edet’s path has not been easy, especially as a mother. Speaking about her experiences, she shared:
“Our football system doesn’t always make room for childbearing. When I got pregnant, I lost my job, and it was financially tough. But with determination and the support of my mother, who cared for my child while I trained, I was able to regain my fitness.”
She advised young female footballers to plan carefully before starting motherhood, as it can be a challenging transition.
Edet’s performances earned her a spot in the CAF Women’s Champions League Best XI, making her the first Nigerian to achieve this recognition.
Her inspiring journey serves as a motivation for many, showing that with determination and resilience, challenges can be overcome, and history can be made.
