Why Brazil Sacked National Team Coach Dorival Junior

Brazil have sacked head coach Dorival Junior after a 4-1 defeat to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier, raising concerns over the team’s poor form.

Despite sitting fourth in South America’s qualification standings and still on track for the 2026 World Cup, Brazil’s struggles under Dorival led to his dismissal. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed his exit in a brief statement, saying:

“The board wishes him success in his continued career. From now on, the CBF will work to find a replacement.”

Why Was Dorival Junior Sacked?

The 62-year-old took charge of the national team in January 2024 but failed to convince with his results. His tenure started with a 1-0 friendly win over England at Wembley, and in 16 games, he recorded seven wins, six draws, and three defeats.

However, the heavy loss to Argentina – a long-time rival that has already secured World Cup qualification – was seen as a major setback, leading to his dismissal.

Brazil’s Coaching Struggles

Brazil has struggled to find a stable head coach since Tite left after the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Before hiring Dorival, they attempted to appoint Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, but he turned down the job.

Who Will Replace Dorival Junior?

Brazilian media reports suggest that Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus is the favourite to take over. The CBF will now begin the search for a new manager to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup.
