Why Donald Trump’s Visit Stirred Emotions at the Ryder Cup

US President Donald Trump arrived at the Ryder Cup on day one at Bethpage Black amid a highly charged atmosphere, SportsRation reports.

Air Force One flew over the golf course just outside New York at about 11:00 local time (16:00 BST) before landing at a nearby airport. Trump then made his way to the course about 45 minutes later, greeting crowds as he entered — some cheered his name and “U‑S‑A”, while others booed. He left just before 14:30 (19:30 BST).

Because of his visit, about 500 law enforcement officers were on duty. New York State Police say the visit ended with “no incidents.”

“Our goal was clearly to avoid any threats, but to achieve that by deterring any potential threat with our presence,” said Major Stephen Udice, the incident commander for the Ryder Cup.

Security had been boosted significantly. The US Secret Service, FBI, CIA, and state police worked together in a cross-agency operation. SWAT teams — including snipers, bomb disposal, and dog units — were also part of the effort.

Given recent tensions — notably the killing of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk — officials had warned the event could be targeted by someone wanting to make a statement.

What Happened at Bethpage Black

At the course, Trump stood behind a protective plastic shield near the first tee. He was introduced to fans over the loudspeaker, pumped his fists, and saluted during The Star-Spangled Banner as military jets flew overhead.

He walked over to chat with US player Bryson DeChambeau, hugged US captain Keegan Bradley, and shook hands with Europe’s captain, Luke Donald. Trump told Donald: “You’re becoming a real great leader,” according to Donald.

Trump’s granddaughter, Kai, a keen amateur golfer, accompanied him. She is due to play college golf at the University of Miami in 2026.

Earlier, Trump had told reporters:

“I think we’ll be OK. All great golfers.”

DeChambeau and Trump are known to have played golf together, and DeChambeau has publicly supported Trump’s political campaign.

The current score after the first day’s foursomes had Europe leading the USA 3‑1. Europe, who won the last Ryder Cup in Rome in 2023, now aim to become the first team to win on American soil since 2012.
